Max ahead of Brazilian GP: 'We know where to find the pace'

Published on 14 November 2019 by Stefan Meens

On the eve of the penultimate race of the 2019 Formula World Championship, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen caught up with the motorsport media in the Interlagos paddock.

Interlagos is one of Max’ favourite tracks on the F1 calendar. “The circuit has a great flow. When you drive a Formula car, it’s nice to have some rounder corners in which you can maintain high corner speed. That’s what Interlagos offers. I also like the elevation change between turn one and turn eight.”

The Brazilian track is considered one of the classic Grands Prix venues of the last few decades. “I remember seeing my dad flipping the car on his F1 debut in 1994. These things happen.” Of course, Max was not alive when his father drove his first Grand Prix. “I’ve seen the video footage. He came in with a bang!”

“I also remember the championships being decided in 2007 and 2008. In 2014, I drove my first free practice session here. I had half a spin but apart from that, it went well that first training. Also, the Brazilians are very passionate motorsport, which is great to see!”

After a strong weekend in the US, Max remains realistic about the 2020 season. “You always have to wait and see. Everyone is motivated and I think we’ve made some steps, also in the last few weeks. We understand more and more where we can find the speed. We’ll try to end the season on a high and take that momentum into next year.”

In the closing two Grands Prix, Max still has a chance to secure third place in the championship. “There’s a chance so we’ll go for the maximum result. We’ll see where we finish after Abu Dhabi.”
