Max P13 in Canada FP2: 'We are competitive in the long runs'

Published on 08 June 2019 by Stefan Meens

After fourth place in the opening practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen managed only P13 in the second Friday session. The Dutchman brushed the ‘Wall of Champions’ on his flying lap resulting in the Dutchman having to abort his timed effort and was unable to set a competitive time. Charles Leclerc was quickest ahead of Ferrari team mate Sebastian Vettel. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) completed the top three.

After free practice, Max explained his compromised FP2: “I’m not sure what happened. Pierre Gasly was in front of me. He was told to speed up. I suffered understeer behind Pierre and I hit the wall. Nothing I can do about it now but it’s obviously a shame because we lost some time.”

Nevertheless, Max is positive about his RB15’s pace. “In normal circumstances we could’ve fought for fourth place. The balance is OK, but we’ll have to find some more grip. The track was still slippery and dusty, which doesn’t work in our favour. I’ve had to use four or five tear-offs; normally I don’t use any!”

Max concluded: “We are competitive in the long runs but we still have work to do and do some fine tuning. Apart from that, it’s not too bad.”
