Max preview US GP: 'We're looking competitive'

Published on 19 October 2018 by Niels Hendrix

After a couple of days holiday in Miami, Max travelled west to Austin, Texas. There, at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver will contest the US Grand Prix. In a rainy paddock, the Dutchman spoke to the gathered press, previewing the upcoming race.

Last year, Max was voted Driver of the Day, before losing his third place after a 5-second time penalty, given for a daring pass on Kimi Raikkonen on the final lap. For this year’s race, the organization have made sure a similar overtake will no longer be possible by placing an new kerbstone at the inside of turns 16 and 17. “There are so many other corners where you can cut. That I did so in those turns last year was a coincidence”, explains Max.

The 21-year-old enjoys spending time in the States. “It’s a wide open country with a lot of different cultures.” The idea of having more Grands Prix in the US has his support. “Races in Los Angeles, Miami and here in Austin would be a great start to make Formula 1 more popular in America.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s Grand Prix, Max is positive. “We’re looking competitive. However, I don’t think we can fight for pole position. Maybe when it rains, but this circuit has a lot of long straights. However, if we find a good balance, have speed and are able to manage to tires, we can hopefully fight at the front in the race.”
