No lap time Max in FP2 after crash: 'Not ideal'

Published on 06 July 2018 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen did not enjoy the best of starts to his British Grand Prix weekend. After a gear box issue in FP1, the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver crashed out of the second free practice session.

The Dutchman lost control of his RB14 on his first flying lap at the Luffield right-hander. In an attempt to correct the rear stepping out, the car snapped the other way and spun into the wall. It meant Max was so was unable to participate in the rest of the session, therefore ending FP2 in P19.

“I think I tried to go too fast on the hard tyre so I lost control. Unfortunately, I damaged the rear right of the car. It’s not ideal to lose this much time in the second practice session but at least the feeling before was quite good. Balance wise, we’re not far off. It’s just that we lose a lot of time on the straights.”

Despite his accident, Max is confident for the rest of the weekend. “I always feel good on this track. Of course, it’s better to get the miles in but I was able to gain a lot of confidence in FP1. We were on the hard tyre and the pace was there. I don’t think we’ll fight for pole position tomorrow but we’ll give it our best shot. We do have at least two sets of the soft Pirellis left, so that’s positive.”

Meanwhile, it was business as usual for the top teams. Both Ferrari and Mercedes setting the pace ahead of Red Bull Racing. In the end, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was fastest, ahead of the two Mercerdes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) and Daniel Ricciardo completed the top five.
