Max fourth Hungaroring FP1

Published on 28 July 2017 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen kicked off his Hungarian Grand Prix with a fourth place in the first free practice session. The Dutchman lapped the Hungaroring 27 times with a fastest effort of 1:19.1. His Red Bull Racing team mate, Daniel Ricciardo, was quickest ahead of Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).

For this Grand Prix weekend, Red Bull brought several updates for the RB13, which explains that Max completes his first couple of laps of the event with ‘aero racks’ mounted to his car. Visible updates noticeable are the different front wing and the mirrors.

After four installation laps, and the earo rack removed, Max heads out for stint on the super-soft Pirellis, the tyre compound he would set his quickest lap time on.

In the meantime, the Hungaroring proves to lack grip in the early stages of the GP weekend. Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren), Romain Grosjean (Haas) and Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) all spin, but without major consequences.

Antonio Giovinazzi, the Ferrari Junior completing FP1 for Haas instead of Kevin Magnussen, is less fortunate. The Italian misses turn 11 and smashes into the tyre wall. The left side of the Haas is damaged and the session is red flagged.

Another driver whose FP1 ended badly was Jolyon Palmer. Right in the final moments of the session, the Renault driver goes wide, clipping a kerb stone with his front wing. The wing is subsequently ripped off and Palmer is forced to park his car track side. The incident signals the end of the first free practice session.
