Canada FP1: Max in seventh

Published on 09 June 2017 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen was seventh fastest in the opening session of the Canadian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton was quickest, followed by Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas.

The first half of the session is characterized by several yellow flags. The first cause is Carlos Sainz. His Scuderia Toro Rosso has an engine failure and the Spaniard is forced to park his car right after the hairpin.

The other yellow flags are caused by the low grip and green nature of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari), Sebastian Vettel, Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) and Esteban Ocon (Force India) lose control of their cars, all without causing damage.

Max has a quiet opening to his Canadian GP weekend. Twenty minutes in, he puts his first lap time on the boards with a six-lap stint on the super softs

Halfway into the session, we see a familiar sight with the Mercedes and Ferraris occupying the top four. The whole quartet then switch to the ultra-soft compound. Force India follows their lead, resulting in Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon in fifth and sixth.

After a while in the garage, Max heads out in the closing stages for a stint on the super soft Pirellis. He manages a 1:14.861. Although he is seventh, behind Ocon and Perez, the lap times are encouraging as the Force Inida’s set their times on a softer, quicker compound.

Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso returned to a familiar scenario with the double world champion forced to park his car track side yet again.
