Max has Florida Winter Series seat fitting

Published on 20 January 2014 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen has had his racing seat fitted in preparation for the Florida Winter Series. The rapid Dutchman, who is about to embark on his single seater racing debut, flew over to the United States last weekend to prepare for the new series, which is supported by the Ferrari Driver Academy.

In Stuart, about an hour and a half away from Miami, Max got to know the mechanics and engineers who will assist him throughout the series. An important part of Verstappen junior's first day was to get him comfortable in his Formula Abarth. The car, in Ferrari red, will feature the Dutch national flag, a hint of orange and race number three, as it is Max' favourite number.

So far, the Verstappens are pleased with the first impressions of the Florida Winter Series. The organization is set up well, proven by the highly professional work environment. Max: "We arrived on Sunday at the Florida Winter Series main garage. It all looks superb and very professional and we started working straight away by fitting my racing seat."

The process of making the seat takes time but is pivotal for the driver's feel with his car. First, several liquid components are poured into a bag in the cockpit. The driver will then get in the car and lean against this bag in the position that is most comfortable. After a while, the mixture that was poured into the bag, will have slowly set. This provides a tailor-made mould ready to be cut into the actual seat.

During the lengthy process of the fitting and construction of the race seat, Max was kept busy: "In between the process of cutting out my seat, I was able to drive in the simulator, which gave me a chance to try the Homestead Speedway. It was good to get to know the track." Nevertheless, Max is craving to drive his new car out on a real track: "The Formula Abarth looks exciting and like Formula 3 you'll have to chance gear with a stick. I can't wait till Wednesday to hit the track!"
