Max on 2017: "I'm more consistent and make less mistakes"

Published on 09 June 2017 by Stefan Meens

Prior the 2017 season, Red Bull Racing had higher expectations after a successful campaign the previous year. However, the teamhas been unable to capitalize on the regulation chance. Not only is Mercedes ahead of the Milton Keynes based outfit, but Ferrari have also proved faster. If the races unfold as expected, Max and team mate Daniel Ricciardo are pretty much guaranteed to finish in fifth and sixth. Nevertheless, Max remains calm.

“I know I’m unable to win at the moment, but that’s how it is. If you have the chance to fight for a podium and that chance is ruined, it makes you angry. It would bad if I said ‘I don’t care if I’m third of fifth’. If you say that, you don’t belong in Formula 1. I’m pretty realistic but you’ll always try to maximize the result.”

This year, the grid is more spread than previous years. “Now, you can guess the top six prior to the race. But that's why manufactures participate in Formula 1, to make the difference. So it will always be difficult to have the teams compete closely.”

Although he wants to fight for wins, Max is aware that sometimes fighting for fifth is part of the sport. “That’s how F1 works; sometimes you’ve got a better car than the year the before, sometimes it’s worse. It depends how good your car is. If P5 is all the car can do, that fifth is a good result. My season is at least more consistent and I make less mistakes compared to last year.”

“For a second win, I have to be patient. There’s no point moaning, that leads to nothing. I’m going to stay positive and intend the make the most of it.”
